HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLAGLER COUNTY

by Diane Marquis

On July 1, 1917 Flagler County was officially formed.  In honor of this event, the Flagler County Historical Society held an Open House at its headquarters, the Holden House in downtown Bunnell.  Many historical objects, pictures and information were on display.  The event was well attended and President Al Hadeed and board members greeted the guests.

On July 2, the Flagler Beach Historical Museum held a fund raiser at the Outback Steakhouse.  This was also in honor of Flagler County’s 90th birthday.  The speaker was Diane Marquis who spoke on the Moody family and the role they played in helping to establish the county.

A display was set up at the library for the month of July featuring pictures and information on the establishing of Flagler County.

Election of Al Hadeed to

Board of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation

Al Hadeed was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation at its annual meeting in Sarasota, Florida, for a three-year term.  The mission of the Florida Trust is to promote the preservation of the architectural, historical and archaeological heritage of Florida through advocacy, education and historic property stewardship.

The members of the Board of Trustees are selected from all regions of the state and are recognized   for  their contributions and commitment to historic preservation.  The Florida Trust works closely with the Florida Division of Historical Resources in assuring the vitality of the state’s preservation programs.  The Florida Trust has co-sponsored studies on the economic impact of historic preservation in the state, the results of which have been widely used by legislators and other policy makers.  It also conducts educational tours and sponsors technical programs for citizens and preservation professionals alike.  The Florida Trust also manages two significant historical properties and a number of preservation easements around the state.  The web address is www.floridatrust.org.  The web site has valuable links to preservation resources in the state and nation.

The Flagler County Historical Society Receives Valuable Gift

By Al Hadeed

The Society was presented with two fine china plates from the formal dining set of General Joseph Hernandez.  The gift also included a dresser scarf from his homestead.  General Hernandez was Florida’s first delegate to the United States Congress in 1821 and its first Hispanic member.  The General lived at what is now Bings Landing and his plantations extended from present day Washington Oaks State Park south to Fox’s Cut in the Hammock and also included much of the F Section of Palm Coast.  He grew sugar, citrus and Sea Island cotton on his plantations.  The General also was the first presiding officer of the Florida’s legislative assembly and was on the statehood committee that selected Tallahassee as Florida’s capitol.

The gift was made by Sally Walker French who is a great, great granddaughter of the General.  Ms. French who resides in Montana also joined the Society as a member and hopes to make a visit soon to see the progress at the preservation pavilion at Bings Landing.
