The early years:

Spanish Colonial Agriculture, the Early 18th Century:
Visitors will learn that Florida was the place where European agri6.gif (24723 bytes)agricultural practices and livestock were first introduced to North America.  Florida is the home of the first European farms in the United States.  Cattle ranching, citrus naval stores, and vegetable farming were all introduced to Florida by the Spanish, 40 years prior to the founding of the Jamestown colony in Virginia.  Visitors will see Florida's rare breeds of cracker cattle and horses, the descendants of the first farm animals introduced to North America.

Plantations and Early Pioneers
Florida had both plantations and pioneer settlements in close proximity in the 18th and 19th centuries.  This exhibit will reveal both a plantation with its system of cash crop production and a pioneeragri16.gif (6068 bytes) settler's home.  It will reveal the economic and social connections between these different ways of life on the Florida frontier.

1890 - 1910 Agricultural Town
Visitors will see a rural town and learn about its role in the movement and trade of agricultural and manufactured goods.  They will walk into a shop, visit the saw mill, see the turpentine operation, and sit on contain bales destined for faraway markets.
