Flagler Audubon Society 2008-2009 season WELCOME! This is what we do l Monthly lectures by leading local bird and ecology experts l Birding trips by car, boat, and/or foot to educate, entertain, socialize. l On line bird sightings database using e-bird.org l Support Audubon Adventures in schools and Audubon scholarships for teachers. l Advocate environmentally friendly practices to protect our world for all living things.
We meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month October through April at the Florida Hospital Flagler (just west of I95) on SR100 Palm Coast. The program will start at 7:00 pm. We will be in meeting room A or B. All members (and visitors) of the community are welcome to attend meetings and participate in activities. Flagler Audubon Society has just completed another successful year. This year's bird programs and related field trips and bird walks were outstanding. We completed our first Christmas Bird Count for 25 years. Our new focus on direct involvement in education paid off with a meeting on owls and birds of prey that attracted over 80 youngsters. Our jewels and corridors program is starting to get traction with the planners for both Palm Coast and Flagler County. Now we get a few months quiet before the season starts again in October. The newly elected board (see officers page for details) will be holding planning meetings during the summer. If you have ideas for programs, trips or directions the board should take then please send us your thoughts via contact us page or directly to FlaglerAudubon@gmail.com. Last field trip for 2008/9 – May 9 - Hontoon Island This island, located in the St. Johns River in Volusia County, welcomes visitors to enjoy nature and history in quiet solitude. The island is accessible only by private boat or park ferry. The field trip was a great success with 28 species seen or heard and a near miss with a bear and her cubs. Next year's bird classes Watch out for our next round of specialist birding classes. Shorebirds in flight, hawks in flight and migratory birds are among the ideas we are considering. Poets corner sometimes we get so wrapped up in what birds we see and count that we don't take the time to stand back and see the big picture of nature's beauty. Poetry helps us take a broader view. One of our friends sent in two haiku below. If anyone else has a poetic contribution or a recommendation – please send them to us for inclusion in this section. Great wings move slowly At a stately measured pace The heron patrol Circles the sky Calling out to each other Ospreys mate for life Mary Mayer
