We will be in meeting room A or B. All members (and visitors) of the community are welcome to attend meetings and participate in activities The RIGHT WHALES are back. At least 9 whales were spotted this week splashing around near Flagler Pier. Don't miss the marvellous experience of seeing these rare and beautiful creatures in one of their few meeting points in the world. Last chance to join us for the Valentine's Day trip to Savannah. Send email to flagleraudubon@gmail.com TODAY if you want to join us. Next meeting – Mar 4 – Beachcombing – more than shells– Mia McGuire We are so lucky to have wonderful sea shells all along our beaches in Flagler. However, there is much more to be seen. The wrack line is the stretch of seaweed and other washed up detritus along the high tide mark. Close examination of this zone reveals a whole new set of plants, seeds and critters some from as far away as Brazil. Maia McGuire will give a lecture on new places to find wildlife along our beaches. Next field trip/bird walk Feb 20 – Lyonia Scrub Jay Festival from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The Florida scrub jay is the only bird unique to Florida, making this threatened species an important part of Florida’s natural heritage. This family event will offer guided nature walks in Lyonia Preserve, live music in the Deltona Amphitheater, children’s activities, environmental presentations, and displays at the LEC and in Lyonia Preserve. As usual – please meet at Winn-Dixie on SR100 at 8:00 a.m. to carpool Next bird walk – Western Flagler – March 13 This trip will be a 2 hour drive through Western Flagler County. Meet at Winn-Dixie at 8:00 a.m. We will set up a convoy and some car pools. Next year's bird classes Watch out for our next round of specialist birding classes. Shorebirds in flight, hawks in flight and migratory birds are among the ideas we are considering. Poets corner sometimes we get so wrapped up in what birds we see and count that we don't take the time to stand back and see the big picture of nature's beauty. Poetry helps us take a broader view. Oh pretty bird! Oh fluff and feathers, beak and bright eye, alliterative name in my throat! Too easy reach to say lover, heart's bloog, blush or flush or crush of wine- dark berries over snow. Too easy now to smile at window glass. Pretty boy. Misjudging you was never just a game.
